Chapter Fourteen

Easton McBride

The sun was baking, and mom dukes had me mowing her lawn as she sat on her porch sipping on a glass of lemonade talking with her neighbor. I only came by to give her some money not to be put to work. When I finished wiping my sweaty face with the bottom of my tank top, I kept on working until all the grass was evenly cut. While I checked out my work, my mother approached me with some lemonade. My mouth was dry. I gulped down the whole glass without an opportunity to savor the flavor or appreciate how fresh the lemonade was, before handing her back the empty glass.

“Nice work, baby. I owe you.” My mother smiled.

“Mom, you know I got you. Do you need anything else before I head out?” I asked.

“Not at the moment. Where are you off to? You usually stay here for dinner.”

“I got a date.”

“With whom?” she was surprised.

“Lovely, your client,” I revealed, and her eyes ballooned in size.

My mother liked to keep things professional in her line of work because she prided herself on being a great businesswoman. If she thought you were cool people, she would get to know you personally. From the way she would talk and laugh with Lovely, I could tell she was fond of her.

“You’re the guy she is dating?” my mother looked me up and down in disbelief.

“What? You didn’t think I could pull a woman like that? Shidddd... I’m Easton McBride, the dick slinger.”

She slapped the back of my head, “Nobody wants to hear about you slinging no dirty dick.”

“Damn, mom. That shit hurt.” She raised her hand to hit me again for cursing, and I flinched.

“Honey, I understand you’re a grown man, and I’m not looking to get in your business, but Lovely needs a man who isn’t afraid to commit. Can you honestly say that you are willing to do that? If you are not ready to nurture her heart and cannot be an example to her boys on how to treat a woman, I suggest you leave her alone.” My mother wasn’t having it.

I thought she would be amused to know I was talking to a decent woman, but because she knew that I wasn’t the most committed man and had seen me with multiple women in many circumstances, she was more concerned for Lovely. Obviously, I was a dog, but that meant I could learn new tricks.

“If I didn’t think I was the man for the job, I wouldn’t be pursuing her.” I tried to convince my mother to see me in a different light, but she gave me a skeptical look.

“I’m serious, boy. You McBride men can’t be trusted. It’s like you have to cheat to survive. As much as I loved your father, some of the shit I let him do to me was ridiculous. That’s one of the reasons why I didn’t want his urn in my house. I might’ve got mad thinking about all
